JULY, 2009: Why Is CCHIT (CERTIFICATION COMMISSION FOR HEALTH CARE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY) so important to the practice of medicine?

To accelerate the adoption of EMRs, the federal government has developed incentive programs through the Stimulus Plan to accelerate the transition over the next 5 years.  The law enabling the Stimulus Funds specifically requires the “meaningful use’ of a CERTIFIED EHR.  The only existing certification entity in the United States is, The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (“CCHIT”), to get Stimulus Funds  it appears that your health information technology has to be approved by this Commission.
